Tips For Choosing the right Burglar Alarm / Home Alarm Systems

Many home insurance providers these days offer discounts on premiums for homes with burglar alarm systems fitted and with good reason; these homes make less claims for theft. Opportunistic thieves can be discouraged by the very sight of a burglar alarm system on your house or by the sound of a siren going off should they attempt to get into your shed or garage. Modern domestic wireless burglar alarm systems have improve massively over the last couple of years and are now very reliable indeed, there is no longer a requirement for professional installation and unsightly wires and it is well worth protecting your property in this way.

The most basic types of burglar alarm systems called Closed Circuit Systems are based on using magnetic switches on doors and windows which break an electric circuit when the window or door is opened; breaking the circuit triggers an alarm. Once the alarm has gone off it can only be de-activated by entering a security code, not simply by re-connecting the circuit.

Motion detectors can be incorporated into your burglar alarm system for extra protection. Passive Infrared (PIR) motion detectors, detect heat radiation from an intruder, triggering the burglar alarm. There is a built-in delay to allow time for the homeowner to enter and key in the security code. Most burglar alarm systems have an internal sounder that emits a tone when you enter the house yourself, to remind you to enter the code and disarm the burglar alarm system.

Once the burglar alarm system is activated by an intruder, an alarm will sound. Some urglar alarm systems will have both inside and outside sounders, some will have additional exterior flashing lights and the most sophisticated will have a telephone auto-dialler to summon help. For protection of distant holiday homes, caravans, or boats where there is no electricity supply or telephone line, GSM burglar alarm systems can be used. GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications (originally from Groupe Special Mobile) and is a standard for mobile telephone systems. Using all the usual components of conventional systems including an audible alarm to discourage intruders, they also include a SIM card and battery to auto-dial through the mobile phone network.

It used to be that in order to create a circuit for a burglar alarm system all the components had to be connected together by wires. Advances in wireless technology now mean that the components can communicate with each other wirelessly making burglar alarm systems much easier and quicker to install and less unsightly. The only maintenance required is a yearly change of batteries.

Most burglar alarm systems use the same basic components and it is possible to adequately protect your home from opportunistic thieves with a DIY wireless burglar alarm system for about £200. More sophisticated burglar alarm systems are only really necessary if you have very valuable property which might be the target of more determined, professional thieves.

For as little as £30 a magnetic switch burglar alarm can be fitted to a shed or garage emitting a loud alarm alerting you or your neighbour to an intruder. To protect garden ornaments or furniture choose a waterproof, wireless PIR burglar alarm system.

If you have a long driveway with an entrance out of sight of your home you might want to consider a suitably placed PIR which will trigger a chime to alert you when someone is approaching.

How to Protect Your Home From Burglars

The most recent Home Office publication, "Crime in England and Wales 2008-09," indicates that the British Crime Survey (BCS) for 2008-09 shows that approximately ¾ million domestic burglary attempts occurred in England and Wales, a similar number to the previous year. Burglaries with property entry and attempted burglaries remained stable at 450,000 and 300,000 respectively. "Distraction" burglaries, which make up approximately 3% of all domestic burglaries, fell by 10% from 2007-08. Non-domestic burglaries also fell, by 2%, to about 300,000 offences.

Most burglars are opportunists who take advantage of lax security. In 30% of cases, burglars gain entry via an open door or window. Generally, burglars have several prerequisites:

1. An assurance that the property is worth burgling. Small, valuable, quickly collected items such as cash, jewellery and laptop computers are of special interest.

2. Concealment. Burglars will seek to enter a property unseen in a poorly-lit area or one obscured by undergrowth.

3. Seclusion. Burglars avoid confrontation with householders and will only attempt crimes when a property appears empty.

4. Straightforward access. Substantial doors and locks which delay a potential burglar for even a relatively short time will often be enough for them to seek an easier target.

Burglars operate on a risk / reward basis. The following security tips should help a potential robber decide that easier pickings lie elsewhere.

Avoid leaving valuables where they can be seen from outside. Deny strangers access to the property; resourceful burglars may "case the joint" by asking to use the phone, requesting a drink or impersonating a door-to-door salesman. Remove shrubbery from entry points, or pick especially thorny plants and put in external security lighting. When away from home install timers to switch on light(s) at night and randomly turn TV and radio on and off. Ensure door hinges are on the inside and fit heavy-duty deadbolt locks to all external doors, along with wide-view peepholes. Avoid "hiding" a key outside. Thieves are well aware of likely locations and guaranteed to find it quickly. Keep unused windows locked at all times.

From trimming back bushes to installing high-security, double locking door night latches and motion sensors, there are many ways in which householders can protect their home. However, the most secure method is the installation of a burglar alarm system. Different burglar alarm systems provide varying levels of security, with some monitoring all ways into the home and others just main doors. Whilst this is a matter of personal preference, external monitoring is a crucial decision. Some systems merely set off a loud internal alarm on detection of unauthorised entry, which is often enough to discourage a burglar. Others are monitored by home security firms, which dispatch police and other services if household security is breached. For frequent travellers, those living in districts with high crime rates or in rural regions with few neighbours, such a monitoring system is well worthy of consideration, although a monthly fee is payable, this is why we offer a full range of self monitored burglar alarm systems that not only contact you but a selection of 5 telephone numbers (mobile or landline) that you have chosen. This eliminate the extra cost of paying for expencive external monitoring and is a revolution in home security. Consultation with a security company regarding the available options is essential. Exactly what is monitored, the ease of use and cost are all important considerations. It is also worth checking insurance policies to determine which systems attract discounts on premiums.
